Pad Thai: The Iconic Thai Dish That Captivates Taste Buds Worldwide

Pad Thai

Pad Thai is one of Thailand's most well-known and adored meals, having a rich history and
flavor profile that has made it a global culinary hit. This stir-fried noodle dish is a wonderful
blend of sweet, salty, sour, and spicy tastes that has become synonymous with Thai cuisine.
Pad Thai is a versatile, flavourful, and unforgettable dish that can be found anywhere from
street food vendors in Bangkok to high-end restaurants throughout the world. It is normally
made with flat rice noodles, coupled with seafood (or chicken or pig), eggs, sauces, and
vegetables such as bean sprouts and shallots served with a dusting of fresh herbs, chilli,
and toasted peanuts.

The Origins of Pad Thai
Pad Thai is currently considered a signature Thai cuisine, yet its origins are very recent.
The dish originated in the 1930s and 1940s, when Thailand, led by
Prime Minister Plaek Phibunsongkhram, was engaged in a nationalistic
movement to unify the country. One component of this campaign
was to promote a distinct Thai identity, and food played a significant role in this effort.

Phibunsongkhram aimed to design a dish that embodied Thai culture while remaining
simple to prepare, inexpensive, and useful. Pad Thai arose as a result of these
efforts. It was influenced by Chinese stir-fried noodle dishes such as
chow mein but with Thai ingredients and flavours. The dish's popularity skyrocketed
due to its simplicity, flavour, and ability to be prepared fast by street vendors.

The Key Ingredients of Pad Thai
The primary components of Pad Thai are:

Rice Noodles
Protein
Eggs
Tofu
Peanuts
Tamarind Paste
Fish Sauce
Palm Sugar
Chili
Lime

Non - Vegetarian

Cook noodles
Prepare rice noodles as directed on the package. This usually entails soaking the noodles in
extremely hot water or boiling them till al dente. Then rinse briefly to avoid sticking.

Prepare sauce
In a mixing dish, combine brown sugar, soy sauce, rice vinegar, lime juice, and fish sauce. Set aside.

Cook chicken or shrimp
In a wok or 12-inch deep sauté pan, heat the oil over medium-high heat.
Sauté the chicken until cooked thoroughly, for about 6 minutes.
If using prawns, cook for 1 1/2 minutes per side, or until opaque.
Transfer to a platter while leaving the oil in the pan.

Cook eggs
Crack the eggs into the centre. Cook and scramble the eggs until they just set.

Stir fry everything together
Toss in the chicken, noodles, and sauce, and simmer for 1–2 minutes.

Add Some Garnish
Serve heated, garnished with cilantro, peanuts, and optional red pepper flakes and sesame seeds.

Vegetarian

Prepare the rice noodles according to the package instructions. Set aside.

Heat the oil in a wok, then add the garlic, onions, carrots, beans, and tomatoes.
Saute the vegetables over high heat until they begin to soften. Lower the heat before proceeding to the next step.

Push the vegetables to the side of the wok and, if desired, break in the egg. Allow it to cook for a few minutes before lightly scrambling it to avoid making too small bits.

Add the prepared noodles and stir completely.
